Reducing Radon Lung Cancer in Raleigh, NC
Raleigh is a nice place to live and raise a family, but if you are renting your home, often you may be getting more than you bargained for when it comes to health concerns. Landlords do not always treat the home as though they are living in it, especially when it comes to items that they do not feel are 100% necessary. Sometimes, your lease will protect you from having to deal with unrepaired maintenance for an extended period of time, but not always. Raleigh residents should be excited for the new regulation placed by HUD on multi-family homes that will offer some increased health standards and protection for you and your family.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD, is part of a larger group that is trying to make an impact by improving the safety and healthiness of homes throughout the U.S. through various actions including radon lung cancer reduction. The individual efforts that HUD has made so far is to regulate radon testing and mitigation in rental homes. Any multi-family home that is being financed by HUD in Raleigh, or anywhere else, will be required to have a test for radon gas. If the results show there are high levels of the gas, then a mitigation system will be required to reduce the levels of the gas.
HUD, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Environmental Protection Agency together form what is known as the Federal Healthy Home Work Group. These organizations will be able to make a great impact to improve home safety as it is obvious the impact that this action from HUD will make. Radon kills 21,000 people each year, so reducing the number of people effected is a great thing.
The American Lung Association on Radon Lung Cancer Reduction
The American Lung Association is extremely proud of the actions HUD has taken as radon gas is the second leading cause for lung cancer. Additionally, a mitigation system is known to improve the air quality throughout the Raleigh home not just by reducing levels of radon gas, but also by having proper ventilation and reducing moisture in the home. With a mitigation system installed, we will be sure to improve the radon lung cancer rate throughout the Raleigh, NC area.
Radon forms from the soil beneath your home in Raleigh as the byproduct of uranium breaking down. As the radon gas forms, it may enter your Raleigh home through the foundation, or even enter the water supply. No matter how the gas enters your home, it becomes a serious problem and will need to be taken care of as soon as possible. S.W.A.T. Environmental is proud of HUD’s action and regulation set in place, as we know the gratification from saving lives by installing a mitigation system. We hope to impact Raleigh by working with HUD to reduce the radon in many homes.
